Active Learning

The School of Sciences is committed to inclusive teaching practices, and we frequently feature active learning and outreach activities in our courses. It is typical for our science courses to consist of a coupled lecture and laboratory experience so that students can apply what they are learning in the classroom to a hands-on setting.  We offer in-house undergraduate research experiences and encourage students to pursue summer internships or research experiences.

Sciences

Our science majors take nearly identical coursework during their first two semesters, then diverge in specialization as they enter upper-level elective coursework. This structure gives our students a sense of confidence in their major program or flexibility to move seamlessly into a new one as their skills and interests develop. Many of our students choose to minor in a related program where they have already taken some foundational first-year coursework.

Mathematics

Students start by studying calculus and a related field such as computer science or economics before diving deeper into pure and applied mathematics topics. Elective space gives room for students to diversify their interests or pursue a minor. All students will complete either a research project or an industry internship.

Pre-Health Professional Programs

Some students within the School of Sciences choose to enter a health professional program, such as pre-medicine.

We offer a robust network of affiliation agreements with outstanding and respected partners—with at least one in all seven branches of the program —which can lead to a conditionally guaranteed seat, a conditionally guaranteed interview or an accelerated pathway into health professional school.  Our well-informed team of faculty advisors offer regular guidance on everything from coursework and summer internships to working proactively and strategically through the graduate school application process.
